For rescue and rehabilitation of the sloth bears in possession of the Kalandars, Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in partnership with the World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA) has initiated a series of measures.

Under the Integrated Sloth Bear Conservation and Welfare Project (ISBCW), Lifetime Care Centers are being planned in different states to house the rescued adult sloth bears. While the juvenile bears which have the potential for release in the wild will be kept at the Rehabilitation Centers.

The project also aims at micro-chipping each sloth bear in possession of the Kalandars so that their individual identity could be established. Individual sloth bears in possession of the Kalandars will be monitored for diseases, thus ensuring adequate health care.

A nationwide survey has been initiated in all the sloth bear range states to create a database of the health status of sloth bears in possession of the Kalandars. The number of dancing bears which are still with the Kalandars will also be recorded.
